The vehicle lotion is the inactive placebo control formulation used in clinical trials for IDP-123 (tazarotene 0.045% lotion), developed by Valeant Pharmaceuticals (now Bausch Health) through its Ortho Dermatologics division. This formulation contains the same excipients as the active drug product but lacks the active retinoid ingredient, tazarotene. It was utilized as a comparator in Phase 2 and Phase 3 randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled studies to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of the active lotion in subjects with moderate to severe acne vulgaris. The vehicle is designed to provide a baseline for the moisturizing and aesthetic properties of the lotion formulation, which was the first tazarotene treatment for acne available in a lotion form.
