The vehicle solution (Cassiopea) is the inactive topical formulation used as the placebo control in the Phase 3 clinical development program (specifically the SCALP 1 and SCALP 2 trials) for clascoterone 5% solution in male androgenetic alopecia. Developed by Cassiopea SpA (now a subsidiary of Cosmo Pharmaceuticals), this vehicle is a pharmacologically inert solution designed to be identical in appearance, odor, and application characteristics to the active drug product but lacks the active pharmaceutical ingredient, cortexolone 17α propionate (clascoterone). It serves as a negative control to establish a baseline for evaluating the efficacy (such as target area hair count and global photographic assessment) and safety of the active androgen receptor antagonist. In clinical studies, the solution is applied topically to the balding areas of the scalp twice daily.
