Overview
Veinofytol is a herbal medicinal product containing a standardized dry extract of horse chestnut (*Aesculus hippocastanum* L.) seeds. Developed by UAB Švenčionių vaistažolės, each capsule is standardized to contain 50 mg of total saponosides expressed as anhydrous aescin (beta-escin), which is the primary bioactive constituent. It is traditionally indicated for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) in adults, addressing symptoms such as swollen legs, varicose veins, pain, and itching. The mechanism of action involves anti-inflammatory effects mediated through the modulation of NF-kappaB signaling and the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine activity. Additionally, Veinofytol has been investigated in Phase II clinical trials for the treatment of mild COVID-19 pneumonia, leveraging the potential antiviral and immunomodulatory properties of aescin against SARS-CoV-2.
