Overview

Velagliflozin is a small molecule sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor developed for veterinary use. It is the active ingredient in Senvelgo, an oral solution indicated to improve glycemic control in otherwise healthy cats with diabetes mellitus not previously treated with insulin. Velagliflozin works by inhibiting SGLT2, the renal transporter responsible for reabsorption of glucose from the glomerular filtrate back into circulation. By blocking SGLT2, it reduces glucose reabsorption and lowers the renal threshold for glucose, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and reduced blood sugar levels. Clinical studies have shown that velagliflozin can be used as a stand-alone alternative to insulin therapy in diabetic cats[1][3][4][7].
