Overview

Venezuelan equine encephalitis vaccine C-84 is an inactivated, lyophilized (dried) viral vaccine developed by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) for the prevention of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE). It is produced by the formalin inactivation of the TC-83 live-attenuated strain of the VEE virus. C-84 is primarily utilized as a booster for personnel at high occupational risk, such as laboratory workers, who have previously received the TC-83 vaccine but failed to achieve or maintain a protective neutralizing antibody titer (typically defined as < 1:20). Because it is an inactivated vaccine, it is generally used to supplement the primary immune response initiated by the live-attenuated vaccine in a heterologous prime-boost strategy.
