Overview

The Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) vaccine is designed to protect against Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE), a zoonotic infectious disease caused by the mosquito-borne alphavirus VEEV. VEEV can cause febrile illness that may progress to encephalitis in both equines and humans, and is considered a potential bioweapon due to its high infectivity via aerosol. Various vaccine candidates are under development, including live-attenuated, DNA-launched, adenovirus-based, and inactivated virus formulations. Notable investigational candidates include TC-83, a live-attenuated strain used for laboratory and military personnel under an Investigational New Drug (IND) protocol, V3526, a live-attenuated virus derived by site-directed mutagenesis, and V4020, a novel DNA-launched, live-attenuated vaccine with enhanced safety and genetic stability features. Despite ongoing research and several promising candidates, there are currently no VEEV vaccines licensed or approved by the FDA for general human use.
