Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Venoferrum is an intravenous iron replacement therapy consisting of a polynuclear iron(III)-hydroxide core stabilized by a sucrose shell, forming a stable iron sucrose complex. This formulation is a non-biological complex drug (NBCD) designed to deliver iron directly into the systemic circulation, bypassing the limitations and gastrointestinal side effects often associated with oral iron supplements. Once administered, the complex is taken up by the reticuloendothelial system, where the iron is released and subsequently binds to transferrin for transport to the bone marrow for erythropoiesis or to storage sites as ferritin. Venoferrum is primarily indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients where oral iron is ineffective, poorly tolerated, or when rapid iron replenishment is required, such as in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or pregnant women. It is marketed and developed in South Korea by JW Pharmaceutical.
