Verapamil is a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), and certain cardiac arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation/flutter. It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through slow channels in myocardial and vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to relaxation of blood vessels, reduced heart workload, increased oxygen supply to the heart, and slowed electrical conduction through the atrioventricular node. This results in lowered blood pressure, relief from angina symptoms, and control of abnormal heart rhythms. Off-label uses include prevention of cluster headaches and migraine prophylaxis[1][2][3][4][5].
