Verbenone is a naturally occurring bicyclic monoterpene ketone that serves as a critical semiochemical in forestry management, primarily functioning as an anti-aggregation pheromone for various bark beetle species, including the mountain pine beetle (*Dendroctonus ponderosae*) and the southwestern pine beetle (*Dendroctonus barberi*). By signaling to beetles that a host tree is already fully colonized, verbenone effectively deters further attacks and protects healthy timber. It is commercially available in specialized formulations such as SPLAT Verb, a flowable matrix developed by ISCA Inc. Beyond its established role in pest management, verbenone is a constituent of several medicinal and aromatic plants, such as rosemary and mastic gum, and is being investigated for its antimicrobial, antifungal, and potential antineoplastic properties. Research in cancer models suggests it may induce G0/G1 cell-cycle arrest and promote apoptosis. Additionally, verbenone is widely utilized as a chiral starting material in the asymmetric synthesis of complex natural products, fragrances, and bioactive sesquiterpenoids.
