Verbesina persicifolia is a medicinal plant belonging to the Asteraceae family, traditionally used in Mexican folk medicine under names such as "huichin," "taxiwa," and "tlamacas." Extracts from its leaves and flowers have been studied for various pharmacological activities. Notably, a eudesman derivative isolated from this plant—4β-cinnamoyloxy,1β,3α-dihydroxyeudesm-7,8-ene (CDE)—acts as a mild mitochondrial uncoupler by interacting with cytochrome C oxidase in the respiratory chain. This results in bioenergetic collapse of mitochondria via increased proton permeability and membrane potential dissipation.
