Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vernonia amygdalina leaf extract, commonly known as bitter leaf extract, is a natural product and herbal extract derived from the leaves of the African shrub *Vernonia amygdalina*. It has a long history of use in traditional African medicine for treating malaria, gastrointestinal disorders, fever, and diabetes. Standardized formulations, such as Roveda (also spelled Rofeda) capsules, have been developed by Benson Idahosa University and commercialized by May & Baker Nigeria, while Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals has also pursued its development. Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated its potential antidiabetic, antiplasmodial, hepatoprotective, and antimicrobial properties, with mechanisms of action involving antioxidant activity, insulin sensitization, and alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase inhibition.
