Vero cell-derived inactivated influenza vaccine refers to a category of influenza vaccines manufactured using the Vero mammalian cell line rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs. This specific program, originally developed by Baxter Healthcare (as Preflucel for seasonal use and Celvapan for pandemic use) and currently associated with Resilience Government Services (formerly Ology Bioservices), utilizes a whole-virion, inactivated approach. The Vero cell platform allows for rapid production scale-up, which is critical for pandemic preparedness, and eliminates the risk of egg-adaptive mutations that can compromise vaccine efficacy. While Preflucel was previously licensed in the European Union, it was later withdrawn from the market. The technology remains a key component of government-sponsored pandemic defense strategies, particularly through manufacturing contracts with the US Department of Defense and BARDA.
