The Vero cell-derived seasonal influenza vaccine (VCIV) is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine produced using the Vero mammalian cell line rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs. This manufacturing process is designed to avoid egg-adaptation mutations that can reduce vaccine effectiveness and provides a suitable alternative for individuals with egg allergies. Developed by Baxter Healthcare (with Alachua Government Services, Inc. involved in clinical trial management and government-sponsored studies), VCIV was evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (such as NCT01117454) to compare its safety and immunogenicity against licensed egg-derived vaccines (EIV). The vaccine aims to provide seasonal protection against circulating influenza A and B strains by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin proteins.
