The vero cell-derived whole virion inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine is an investigational seasonal influenza vaccine developed by Baxter Vaccine AG. Produced using a continuous mammalian Vero cell culture system rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs, this formulation avoids egg-adaptive mutations and is suitable for individuals with egg allergies. The vaccine contains three inactivated whole influenza virus strains (typically two A subtypes and one B lineage), preserving the entire virion structure to potentially enhance immunogenicity, including cellular T-cell responses. It was evaluated in a Phase II/III clinical trial during the 2004/2005 influenza season, where it demonstrated safety and immunogenicity comparable to licensed egg-derived split-virion vaccines.
