Overview

Verpasep caltespen is a recombinant fusion protein vaccine designed to treat diseases caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV type 16. It consists of the Mycobacterium bovis heat shock protein 65 (Hsp65) covalently linked to the E7 early protein of HPV16. The Hsp65 component serves as an adjuvant and carrier, enhancing the uptake and processing of the E7 antigen by antigen-presenting cells to stimulate a robust CD8+ T-cell mediated immune response against HPV-infected cells. Originally developed by Stressgen Biotechnologies, the agent was investigated in clinical trials for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), and anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN). Despite showing promise in early studies, development was largely discontinued after failing to meet primary endpoints in late-stage trials.
