Photodynamic + pulsed dye laser is an investigational combination therapy for the treatment of port wine stains (PWS). The treatment involves the intravenous administration of verteporfin (liposomal benzoporphyrin derivative monoacid ring A), a photosensitizing small molecule marketed under the brand name Visudyne. Following administration, the PWS lesion is irradiated with a pulsed dye laser (PDL), typically at a wavelength of 576 nm. The laser light activates the verteporfin, leading to the localized generation of reactive oxygen species that selectively damage the abnormal cutaneous microvasculature and vascular endothelium characteristic of PWS. This dual approach aims to improve clinical outcomes in patients whose lesions are resistant to standard PDL therapy alone. The development and clinical evaluation of this combination are primarily led by the Beckman Laser Institute at the University of California, Irvine.
