Overview

Verticillium albo-atrum is a soil-borne plant pathogenic fungus recognized as a dangerous quarantine pathogen due to its role in causing verticillium wilt, a disease that impacts a broad spectrum of economically important crops. Despite its pathogenic nature, specific strains, such as Verticillium albo-atrum strain WCS850, are being evaluated for their utility as active substances in pesticides, specifically as fungicides for elm trees. Furthermore, this fungus is a source of natural meroterpenoids, including acetoxydehydroaustin A and austin, which have demonstrated insecticidal properties through their ability to modify voltage-gated sodium channels in the central neurons of insects like Helicoverpa armigera.
