Overview

VesCell is an autologous cell therapy developed by TheraVitae Ltd., consisting of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) harvested from a patient's own peripheral blood. It is designed to treat severe cardiovascular conditions, specifically refractory angina pectoris and myocardial ischemia, by promoting neovascularization (angiogenesis) in ischemic heart tissue. The therapy involves collecting the patient's blood, isolating and expanding the EPCs in a specialized laboratory, and then re-administering them via intracoronary injection. This approach aims to improve blood flow and cardiac function in patients with occluded coronary arteries who are not candidates for traditional revascularization procedures like bypass surgery or angioplasty. The cells act through both direct integration into the vascular endothelium and the paracrine secretion of angiogenic growth factors.
