Overview

Vespula pensylvanica venom protein is a sterile allergen extract derived from the Western Yellowjacket, used for both the diagnosis and treatment of Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity. In diagnostic applications, it is utilized in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify IgE-mediated sensitivity. For therapeutic use, it is administered via venom immunotherapy (VIT), a process involving the subcutaneous injection of gradually increasing doses of the venom. This treatment induces immunological tolerance by shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1 or regulatory T-cell (Treg) profile, characterized by the production of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies and increased levels of IL-10. These changes effectively inhibit the IgE-mediated release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells and basophils upon subsequent stings, significantly reducing the risk of systemic anaphylaxis.
