Veterinary DIBI is a water-soluble, low molecular weight iron-chelating co-polymer developed by Chelation Partners (Fe Pharmaceuticals) for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs. Chemically, DIBI is a 9 kDa co-polymer consisting of a polyvinylpyrrolidone backbone with nine 3-hydroxy-1-(methacrylamidoethyl)-2-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinone (MAHMP) residues, which allows each polymer molecule to coordinate three iron molecules completely. By binding and sequestering extracellular iron (specifically ferric iron, Fe3+) with high affinity, Veterinary DIBI deprives opportunistic pathogens (such as *Staphylococcus pseudintermedius* and *Malassezia pachydermatis*) of the essential iron required for growth and replication. This mechanism of action is purely bacteriostatic/fungistatic and avoids the development of antimicrobial resistance. In a Phase 2 clinical study in dogs, topical administration of Veterinary DIBI alone demonstrated therapeutic equivalence to the standard of care (a combination of two antibiotics) for canine otitis externa.
