Overview
Vetevel is a veterinary-specific phosphate binder containing sevelamer hydrochloride, indicated for the management of hyperphosphatemia in cats and dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is a non-absorbed, cross-linked polymeric compound that acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract. By binding to dietary phosphate through ion exchange and hydrogen bonding, Vetevel prevents the absorption of phosphorus into the systemic circulation. This reduction in phosphate load is crucial for managing secondary renal hyperparathyroidism and slowing the progression of renal disease in companion animals. Unlike calcium-based binders, Vetevel does not increase serum calcium levels, reducing the risk of metastatic calcification and other complications associated with mineral-bone disorders in pets with impaired renal function.
