Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vevizye is a topical ophthalmic solution containing 0.1% cyclosporine, developed for the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye disease (DED) in patients who have not responded adequately to artificial tears. Unlike traditional cyclosporine emulsions, Vevizye is an aqueous, preservative-free solution based on EyeSol technology, which enhances the solubility and bioavailability of the active ingredient. Cyclosporine acts as a calcineurin inhibitor; it binds to cyclophilin to form a complex that inhibits the phosphatase activity of calcineurin, thereby preventing the activation of T-lymphocytes and the subsequent release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-2 (IL-2). This mechanism addresses the underlying ocular surface inflammation characteristic of DED, helping to restore tear film stability and improve corneal health. The drug is marketed by Laboratoires Thea in various European markets and has been evaluated in clinical studies such as the FOCUS trial.
