Vezocolmitide is a synthetic collagen mimetic peptide developed as a topical ophthalmic therapeutic for the treatment of dry eye disease. It is the first drug candidate based on Stuart Therapeutics' PolyCol platform, which utilizes synthesized polypeptides that mimic key amino acid sequences found in extracellular matrix (ECM) collagen. The mechanism of action involves rapid restoration and repair of disease-damaged helical collagen in ocular tissues, leading to ECM structural repair and normalization of cell signaling activity. This results in improved cell health, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, restoration of corneal sub-basal nerve plexus, and beneficial effects on nerve processes and epithelial cells implicated in dry eye disease. Vezocolmitide has demonstrated rapid relief of symptoms and improvement in tear function within 28 days during clinical trials[1][3][5]. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for dry eye disease[1][7].
