Overview

VGH-BPH1 is a Chinese herbal medicine prescription developed as an add-on treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is a modified formula based on the earlier VGHBPH0, with adjusted dosages of Zhi-Mu and Huang-Bo to potentially improve urinary symptoms. The formulation was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in patients with moderate to severe BPH who were already receiving standard Western medical therapy. While VGH-BPH1 did not significantly outperform placebo in improving BPH symptoms as measured by the International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS), it showed improvements in certain quality of life indicators such as joint pain and physical exhaustion. The mechanism of action is presumed to be multi-targeted modulation typical of traditional Chinese herbal medicines, but specific molecular targets are not defined[1][2][3][5].
