VGV-1 is an investigational biologic therapy developed as a potential salvage treatment for HIV-infected individuals who have failed standard antiretroviral therapy. It is based on thymus nuclear protein (TNP), extracted from bovine thymus tissue. Unlike conventional antiretrovirals that directly target the virus, VGV-1 acts as an immunomodulator—stimulating or modulating the immune system to help control HIV infection. Its mechanism of action includes inhibition of the HIV envelope protein gp41 and general immunostimulant effects. Clinical development included a phase 3 trial in South Africa for patients with advanced-stage HIV infection (CDC stage 2). The drug was administered intramuscularly in a regimen of sixteen injections over eight weeks and was projected to be cost-effective compared to daily ART/HAART regimens[1][2][4][5].
