Vi capsular polysaccharide vaccine

Vi capsular polysaccharide vaccine (Vi-PS) is a subunit vaccine used to prevent typhoid fever. It contains purified Vi polysaccharide extracted from Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. Each 0.5 mL dose contains 25 mcg of purified Vi polysaccharide in a phosphate buffered saline solution. The vaccine induces a T cell-independent B cell response and provides protection for approximately 2 years, with an efficacy of about 55% in older children and adults. It is administered as an intramuscular injection and is indicated for use in individuals 2 years of age and older.
