Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VIAcal is a pharmaceutical preparation developed by Biodel Inc. containing recombinant salmon calcitonin as its active ingredient. Designed for the treatment of osteoporosis, VIAcal utilizes a specialized drug delivery system intended for the controlled release of the biologic. As a recombinant protein, it acts as a potent agonist of the calcitonin receptor, which is primarily located on osteoclasts. By binding to these receptors, VIAcal inhibits bone resorption and helps regulate calcium metabolism, thereby increasing bone mineral density. The product was part of Biodel's early pipeline but was eventually deprioritized as the company shifted its focus toward its insulin delivery technologies.
