Overview

Vibrio alginolyticus collagenase is a purified enzyme derived from the bacterium *Vibrio alginolyticus*, currently under clinical development by Fidia Farmaceutici. It functions as a zinc-dependent metalloproteinase that specifically targets and hydrolyzes collagen fibers, particularly Type I and Type III collagen. In the treatment of Peyronie's disease, the enzyme is administered via intralesional injection directly into the fibrotic plaque (tunica albuginea). By degrading the excessive collagen deposits that characterize these plaques, the drug aims to reduce penile curvature, alleviate associated pain, and improve sexual function. This microbial collagenase is being investigated as a potential alternative to the established *Clostridium histolyticum* collagenase, with ongoing studies evaluating its safety and efficacy in patients with stable-phase Peyronie's disease.
