Overview

Vibrio cholerae Inaba 48 classical biotype, heat inactivated is a component of oral killed whole-cell vaccines used for the prevention of cholera. It consists of Vibrio cholerae O1 Inaba serogroup bacteria (classical biotype) that have been rendered non-infectious by heat treatment. This strain is included as an antigenic component to stimulate immunity against V. cholerae O1 Inaba strains responsible for epidemic and pandemic cholera. The mechanism of action involves induction of mucosal and systemic immune responses against V. cholerae antigens, thereby providing protection from infection and severe diarrheal disease caused by this pathogen[6][8]. It is commonly formulated with other V. cholerae strains (Ogawa/Inaba; El Tor/classical) and sometimes recombinant B subunit of the toxin as part of multivalent oral vaccines such as Dukoral[6]. The primary indication is prophylaxis against infection with Vibrio cholerae O1.
