Overview

Vibrio cholerae Ogawa 50 classical biotype, formalin inactivated is a component of several oral inactivated whole-cell vaccines used for the prevention of cholera. It consists of the O1 Ogawa serotype (classical biotype) of Vibrio cholerae that has been killed by treatment with formalin. This antigen is included alongside other V. cholerae strains and recombinant B subunit of cholera toxin to induce immunity against infection by stimulating an immune response to both bacterial surface antigens and the toxin[5][7][8]. The vaccine is administered orally and has demonstrated high efficacy against clinical disease caused by V. cholerae O1[5]. It is primarily indicated for prophylaxis against epidemic or travel-related risk of cholera.
