Overview

Vibrio cholerae Ogawa 50 classical biotype, heat inactivated is a component of several oral whole-cell killed (WCK) cholera vaccines. It consists of the O1 Ogawa serotype of Vibrio cholerae (Cairo 50 strain), which has been rendered non-infectious by heat inactivation. This antigen is used as part of multivalent oral vaccines such as Euvichol and Dukoral for the prevention of cholera. The mechanism involves induction of mucosal and systemic immunity against *V. cholerae* O1 antigens to prevent colonization and toxin-mediated disease following exposure[5][7][8]. These vaccines are primarily indicated for prophylaxis against infection with *Vibrio cholerae* O1 strains.
