Overview

Vidaphor is an intravenously administered perfluorocarbon-based oxygen therapeutic, consisting primarily of perfluorodecalin emulsified with a second stabilizing perfluorocarbon, surfactant (Proxanol 268), and electrolytes to form a milky emulsion that can dissolve and transport large amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide independently of hemoglobin.[1][2][3][5][7][8] Developed originally in Russia under the name Perftoran, it has been approved and used clinically in Russia, China, Mexico, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan as an artificial oxygen carrier and plasma additive for hemorrhagic anemia, hemorrhagic shock, regional and organ ischemia, vascular gas embolism, and cerebral or spinal trauma, with more than 35,000–40,000 patient exposures reported and generally manageable adverse effects.[1][5][7][8][11] The product is being rebranded and further developed in North America by FluorO2 Therapeutics for use as a red blood cell substitute and adjunctive oxygen delivery agent, including potential applications in oncology to reduce tumor hypoxia and enhance sensitivity to platinum chemotherapy.[1][2][4][5][7][8]
