Overview

Vidofludimus calcium (IMU-838) is a small molecule selective inhibitor of the enzyme **dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH)**, which is essential for the de novo synthesis of pyrimidines. By inhibiting DHODH, the drug targets overactive immune cells and virus-infected cells, exerting both anti-inflammatory and broad-spectrum antiviral effects. Oseltamivir is a well-established neuraminidase inhibitor typically used for influenza. This specific combination was the subject of the **IONIC trial** (IMU-838 and Oseltamivir in COVID-19), a Phase 2 study sponsored by the **University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust** and funded by LifeArc, designed to investigate whether the addition of IMU-838 to standard care (including oseltamivir) improves clinical recovery time in COVID-19 patients.
