Vif inhibitor is a small molecule drug candidate being developed by Innovative Bioresearch (also known as Innovative Biopharmaceuticals) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. The drug targets the HIV-1 Viral infectivity factor (Vif) protein, a critical accessory protein that the virus uses to evade the host's innate immune system. Vif's primary role is to induce the degradation of the host antiviral enzyme APOBEC3G, which would otherwise cause lethal hypermutations in the viral genome during reverse transcription. By inhibiting Vif, the drug prevents the degradation of APOBEC3G, allowing it to be packaged into new virions and subsequently neutralize the virus. This therapeutic approach aims to restore the host's natural defense mechanisms against HIV-1 and is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
