Overview
Vikalin is a multi-component combination drug primarily used in Russia and other CIS countries for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as peptic ulcers and gastritis. It contains a mixture of active ingredients including bismuth subnitrate, magnesium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, Frangula bark powder, rutin, and khellin. The drug acts through several mechanisms: bismuth subnitrate provides gastroprotective, astringent, and antibacterial effects (specifically against *Helicobacter pylori*); magnesium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate serve as antacids to neutralize gastric acid; khellin acts as an antispasmodic to relax smooth muscle; rutin provides vasoprotective effects; and Frangula bark acts as a mild laxative to counteract the constipating effects of bismuth. Vikalin is typically administered orally in tablet form.
