Overview

Vilanterol is an ultra-long-acting β₂-adrenoceptor agonist (ultra-LABA) used as a bronchodilator. It acts by selectively stimulating β₂-adrenergic receptors in the airway smooth muscle, leading to muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. Vilanterol is not available as a monotherapy but is used in fixed-dose combination inhalers for the long-term maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and asthma. It was developed by GSK and first approved in 2013 as part of combination products such as Breo Ellipta (with fluticasone furoate), Anoro Ellipta (with umeclidinium), and Trelegy Ellipta (with fluticasone furoate and umeclidinium)[5][9][10].
