Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vildagliptin + metformin is a fixed-dose oral combination therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines two antihyperglycemic agents with complementary mechanisms of action. Vildagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that increases levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), thereby enhancing insulin secretion and reducing glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin is a biguanide that decreases hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity by activating AMPK. The combination provides improved glycemic control compared to either agent alone and is indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled on monotherapy or as part of triple therapy regimens[1][3][5][6]. The product was developed by Novartis.
