Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Velon-M is a fixed-dose combination of vildagliptin and metformin hydrochloride used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Vildagliptin is a potent and selective dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that enhances glycemic control by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which stimulate insulin secretion and suppress glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent that improves glucose tolerance by lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose. It works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, reducing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity. The combination is typically indicated for patients who do not achieve adequate glycemic control with metformin alone or who are already being treated with the combination of vildagliptin and metformin as separate tablets.
