Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VIM-004 is a topical gel formulation of afamelanotide, a synthetic peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Developed by Vimela Therapeutics, it is designed to treat vitiligo by targeting the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) to stimulate melanocyte activity and promote skin repigmentation. Unlike systemic formulations of afamelanotide (such as the subcutaneous implant Scenesse), VIM-004 is applied topically to localized areas of depigmentation. It is currently being evaluated in Phase Ib/IIa clinical trials in combination with narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy to evaluate its safety and preliminary efficacy in enhancing repigmentation in adults with vitiligo, particularly in refractory areas. The drug represents an orthogonal approach to existing immunomodulatory therapies by directly stimulating the pigment-producing cells.
