Vinclozolin is a synthetic **dicarboximide fungicide** primarily used in agriculture to control blights, rots, and molds, especially in leafy vegetables, soft fruits (e.g., raspberries, strawberries), stone fruits, and on golf course turf[3][5][8]. The compound acts as a **competitive antagonist of the androgen receptor**, with most biological activity attributable to its metabolites M1 and M2, which exhibit antiandrogenic effects[1][3][7]. It strongly disrupts endocrine functions, particularly affecting male sexual differentiation and reproductive development in animals by blocking androgen action[1][3][7]. Vinclozolin has also demonstrated probable carcinogenicity in animal studies and is considered a possible human carcinogen, with evidence of Leydig cell and prostate tumors in rats and benign ovarian tumors in females[5][9]. Its use has been banned or restricted in several countries, but it remains of significant toxicological and regulatory interest due to its activity as an endocrine disruptor and carcinogen[3][5][11].
