Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vindoline is an indole alkaloid isolated from the Madagascar periwinkle (*Catharanthus roseus*). It is well-known as a biosynthetic precursor to the chemotherapy drugs vinblastine and vincristine. Research into vindoline itself has focused on its potential therapeutic applications in metabolic diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes and its associated cardiovascular and renal complications. In preclinical models, vindoline has demonstrated anti-diabetic properties by improving lipid profiles and reducing markers of kidney dysfunction like urea. Its mechanism of action involves mitigating oxidative stress through the enhancement of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and providing anti-apoptotic effects by downregulating caspase 9 expression. While it shows promise in laboratory settings, it is primarily utilized as a research tool and chemical intermediate.
