Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vinegar-processed frankincense is a traditional preparation of frankincense (the resin from the Boswellia tree) that has been treated with vinegar to enhance its medicinal properties. The primary active components are boswellic acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects. Vinegar processing improves the absorption and bioavailability of these boswellic acids by modulating bile acid metabolism and upregulating transport proteins such as multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2) and organic anion transporting polypeptide 1B3 (OATP1B3). This results in increased plasma levels of boswellic acids and enhanced therapeutic efficacy, particularly in conditions like ulcerative colitis. The mechanism involves increased colonic lithocholic acid (LCA), which activates nuclear receptors such as constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) and pregnane X receptor (PXR), further promoting absorption-related protein expression[1][4].
