Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Viniferin is a naturally occurring polyphenol and a dimer of resveratrol found in grapevines (*Vitis vinifera*), red wine, and other plant sources. It exists in several isomeric forms, most notably epsilon-viniferin (ε-viniferin) and alpha-viniferin (α-viniferin). Viniferin acts as a potent activator of sirtuin 3 (SIRT3), a mitochondrial NAD+-dependent deacetylase that regulates mitochondrial function, reduces oxidative stress, and maintains metabolic homeostasis. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that viniferin ameliorates diabetes-induced tubular injury, protects against mutant huntingtin-induced neurotoxicity in Huntington's disease models, and reduces inflammation in acute lung injury. Additionally, clinical studies have evaluated topical alpha-viniferin for *Staphylococcus aureus* nasal decolonization and skin hyperpigmentation. Viniferin is commercially available as a dietary supplement ingredient, notably as part of Elysium Health's 'Signal' mitochondrial support supplement.
