Overview

Vinylglycine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid derivative characterized by the presence of a vinyl group attached to the alpha-carbon of glycine. It exists as both D and L enantiomers, with L-vinylglycine being more commonly referenced in biochemical contexts. Vinylglycine acts as an irreversible inhibitor of aspartate aminotransferase, interfering with transamination reactions in amino acid metabolism. It also inhibits EC 4.4.1.14 (1‑aminocyclopropane‑1‑carboxylate synthase), impacting ethylene biosynthesis pathways in plants and certain metabolic processes in fungi[1][2][5][6]. Its unique structure makes it useful for research into enzyme mechanisms, peptide synthesis, and as an intermediate for developing novel pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals[3][7]. Vinylglycine is not approved for clinical use and is primarily used experimentally.
