Overview
*Viola odorata*, commonly known as sweet violet, is a perennial flowering plant in the family Violaceae. In the context of clinical research by Beirut Arab University, it is being investigated for its potential antihypertensive properties. Traditionally used in various systems of medicine for respiratory and inflammatory conditions, its cardiovascular effects are thought to be mediated through vasodilatory and diuretic mechanisms. A Phase 0 clinical trial evaluated its efficacy, alongside other indigenous Lebanese plants, in reducing blood pressure in patients with mild hypertension who were unresponsive to lifestyle modifications.
