Overview

Violacein is a natural bis-indole pigment primarily produced by the bacterium *Chromobacterium violaceum*. It is being developed by Farmabrasilis as a multi-functional therapeutic agent with reported cytotoxic, antibacterial, and antiparasitic activities. In oncology, violacein has demonstrated the ability to induce apoptosis in various cancer cell lines through mechanisms involving the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), activation of the p38 MAPK pathway, and modulation of p53 and NF-κB signaling. Beyond its antineoplastic potential, it exhibits potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA), and shows promise as an antimalarial agent. It is currently in preclinical development for the treatment of cancer.
