VIR-1111 is an investigational HIV T cell vaccine developed by Vir Biotechnology. It utilizes a proprietary viral vector technology based on human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), originally developed at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and acquired through the purchase of TomegaVax. The vaccine is designed to elicit a unique and potent T cell immune response, specifically targeting HIV epitopes that are not typically recognized by the immune system. This proof-of-concept candidate entered Phase 1 clinical trials in late 2020 with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The HCMV vector platform aims to provide a persistent immune stimulus, potentially leading to long-lasting protection against HIV infection.
