Overview

Viral-specific T-lymphocytes (VSTs) developed under the leadership of Jessie L. Alexander are an adoptive cellular therapy designed to restore anti-viral immunity in immunocompromised patients, particularly those who have undergone hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) or solid organ transplantation (SOT). This specific therapeutic product is generated using the Miltenyi Biotec CliniMACS Prodigy or CliniMACS Plus systems and a Cytokine Capture System (CCS). The process involves the ex vivo stimulation of donor-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells with specific viral antigens from Adenovirus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). T cells that secrete interferon-gamma in response to these antigens are immunomagnetically labeled and captured, allowing for the rapid production of a multi-virus-specific T-cell product. Once infused, these VSTs target and eliminate virus-infected cells, providing a targeted treatment for refractory viral infections or persistent viremia that has failed standard therapy.
