Overview
**viramidine + pegylated interferon alfa-2a** is a combination therapy investigated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. **Viramidine** is a liver-targeting prodrug of ribavirin, intended to reduce the incidence of dose-limiting anemia compared to ribavirin when used in combination with **pegylated interferon alfa-2a (Pegasys)**, a recombinant human interferon modified for extended activity. Viramidine is metabolized to ribavirin principally in the liver, aiming for improved safety profiles. Pegylated interferon alfa-2a works by binding human type 1 interferon receptors to induce an antiviral response via the JAK/STAT pathway, upregulating immune-related gene expression. Primary indications studied were chronic hepatitis C, with the rationale to improve the balance of efficacy and safety (especially anemia risk) over standard ribavirin + interferon therapy.
