Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Virgin coconut oil is a natural plant-based oil extracted from the fresh meat of mature coconuts (Cocos nucifera) without the use of high temperatures or chemical refining. It is distinct from refined coconut oils in that it retains more bioactive compounds and has not undergone bleaching or deodorizing processes. Virgin coconut oil consists primarily of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), especially lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid. These MCFAs are metabolized differently than long-chain fatty acids found in most other dietary fats. Virgin coconut oil is used both as a food ingredient and for topical application. It has been promoted for various health benefits including improving skin barrier function, moisturizing dry skin, supporting hair health by reducing protein loss and damage, providing antimicrobial effects due to its lauric acid content (notably against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus), aiding wound healing through anti-inflammatory properties, and possibly supporting oral health via "oil pulling." Some studies suggest potential benefits for eczema when applied topically. When ingested as part of the diet, claims include increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol levels and possible support for weight management due to rapid metabolism of MCFAs; however, it also raises LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels and is very high in saturated fat. There is limited evidence supporting its use for diabetes management or neurological conditions such as epilepsy when used within ketogenic diets. Despite widespread traditional use in tropical regions and popularity in wellness communities worldwide, robust clinical evidence supporting many claimed systemic health benefits remains limited or inconclusive[1][2][3][4][5][6].
